Bubka Confirms His Bid for IAAF Presidency

Written by

IAAF Vice President Sergey Bubka has announced that he will stand as a candidate for the role of IAAF President. Legendary pole vaulter Bubka has served for the past 15 years in various senior positions at the IAAF, IOC (currently EC member) and Ukrainian National Olympic Committee (currently president). On making the announcement, he said:

“I am seeking the IAAF Presidency to give something back to the world of athletics which has given so many opportunities to me throughout my life. I have been honoured to serve athletics alongside Lamine Diack, with my colleagues and friends. Now that Mr. Diack has decided to step down as President, I wish to build upon the progress achieved by the IAAF under his leadership to ensure that the sport of athletics and its governing body are world-class and an example to others with regard to governance, transparency and ethics. We also need to provide greater grassroots support to inspire the next generation of athletes; we need to better engage with young people and build new audiences; and we need to ensure protection of clean sport.”  The elections will be held in August during IAAF Congress. The other candidate who so far announced to go for the president post is legendary middle distance runner and also current IAAF Vice President Sebastian Coe.

Olympic silver medallist Galen Rupp will be returning to The Armory for the first time since his high school days when he races at the Armory Track Invitational on Saturday. The Nike Oregon Project athlete’s last outing at the Armory was at the New Balance Indoor Games, where he was beaten by Josh McDougal in the 2 mile, running a time of 8:54.45. Rupp will also be competing at the Millrose Games at the same venue on February 14. Although Rupp now has to balance being a father with being an athlete, he says that “things haven’t changed too much.”
