Walsh 21.50, Birkinhead 21.35 NR
ZAGREB (CRO, Aug 28): World champion Tomas Walsh won the Ivancic Memorial shot put at the Fountain Square here with 21.50 effort from third round. Also his 21.48 from 2nd round would be enough to win. Surprise second was Damien Birkinhead with new Australian record 21.35 (14 cm improvement of his PB), former mark of Scott Martin was 21.26 from 2008. Third place for Poland´s Michal Haratyk 21.34 who only came on the day of the meet from Berlin. Jamaican O´Dayne Richards was fourth 21.00 ahead of London medalists Joe Kovacs 20.85 and Stipe Zunic 20.66. Some 1000 spectators followed this special event as the best invitation for the Tuesday´s meet.
Okuneva 197 in high jump
TAIPEI (TPE, Aug 28): On the final day of the World University Games, Ukraine’s Oksana Okuneva won the high jump with a 1.97m (best career result outside of Ukraine) clearance before three attempts at 2.00m to defeat teammate Iryna Herashchenko (1.91m) and Lithuania’s Airine Palsyte (1.91m) and Czech Republic’s Radek Juska went out to 8.02m in the long jump ahead
