The Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon is the flagship event in the seven-race series, and has been selling out since 2009  -SONOMA, Calif. – A record number of people attempted to register for the 2015 Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon, presented by Newton Running, when registration opened on Friday, November 7th.  With nearly three times as many people trying to register as had ever before, many experienced a delay during the payment process, and others weren’t able to register at all.

The Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon is the flagship event in the seven-race series, and has been selling out since 2009.  With participants from all over the country and globally, registration has become a race in itself.

“The fact that two thirds of our participants are coming from outside California and the United States is astounding!” commented Destination Races Founder and President Matt Dockstader.  “However, it's a challenging day when so many people plan accordingly and make the effort to register and then get rejected or delayed in the process.  We apologize to all those who were affected.”

The online registration engine, imATHLETE, is investigating ways to ensure the delays aren’t an issue in the future.  “We are thrilled by the dramatic increase in excitement for the Napa-to-Sonoma race,” said imATHLETE CEO, Jeff Matlow.  “The race was on track to sell out in record time.  Unfortunately, the unprecedented traffic caused timeouts with our payment processor, as well as slow downs during the registration process.  imATHLETE is committed to streamlining the participant experience and is diligently exploring opportunities for enhancements.  We look forward to selling out even faster next year!”

In an effort to accommodate any runners who were unable to register and who are on the official 2nd Chance Wait List,’ Destination Races is offering heavily discounted entry of $30 ($100 off) into the inaugural Temecula Wine Country Half Marathon, scheduled for this weekend.   Runners who are on the official Wait List for Napa-to-Sonoma must appear in person at the race expo in Temecula on Friday, November 14th  (10:00 AM – 7:00 PM) in order to register for Saturday’s race.  Those on Napa-to-Sonoma’s 2nd Chance Wait List will be notified on February 2, 2015 if they’ve been accepted.

“Our races are a boutique-style event held in a beautiful place with wine country events, hospitality and ambience,” added Dockstader.   “I think our customers understand we can’t accommodate everyone and appreciate the efforts we take to enhance the customer experience by limiting our fields at all our events.  We encourage people to try our other races that carry the same attention to detail, and offer similar features and amenities.”

Opportunities to participate in the 2015 Napa-to-Sonoma event are still available.  Registration is open for the GunBunFunRun 5K, as well as Marathon Tours’ all-inclusive Estate VIP package.  Another avenue is through the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America.  They offer reserved entries through their endurance fundraising program – Team Challenge.  A few other charity program entries may exist in the future.  Check the event website for updates.
